05 - France - Axis - Turn 22 of 26

June 5, 1940: with the French outflanked the Germans drive into France, and attempt to capture Paris.

Axis: player
Allies: advanced a.i.

PLAN
PHASE ONE - Although the Axis player is the attacker, the Allies will attack first in advanced A.I., so let's wait for the incoming enemies and get rid of them taking advantage of Somme river.
PHASE TWO - Once the enemy turns to a defensive stance, attack Paris with all units.
PHASE THREE - As soon as Paris is taken, split army in two: army group west will attack Le Havre first and then Caen, army group east will occupy Montargis, Orleans and Tours.
PHASE FOUR - The circle will close as the two armies will attack the final objective, Le Mans, from all directions.
Strategy for attacking an objective is: first hit artillery with tanks, usually flanking the city from behind, then eliminate air defense with artillery and Panzers IVD, which are very effective, then enter airplanes and infantry for the final showdown. This scenario is 26 turns, we will end by turn 22.

TURN 1 - AXIS
From west to east: there's a light cruiser in (16.4) coming to hit our soft targets, move a BF 109e just adjacent then attack it with JU88A.
Move the air defense unit in Abbeville to the center, enemy airplanes will come to attack in allies turn, defend the area around Amiens with a BF109e.
Retreat all units behind Somme river, enemies will try to cross it. To be able to retreat, eliminate enemy infantry unit in 30.5, just south east of Amiens, where the JU87 is.
Place two infantry unis with no transport in airports, they will come very useful in future.
Units in the east cannot retreat behind Somme, so attack Reims to get prestige points and an airfield.

TURN 1 - ALLIES
From west to east: light cruiser has bombed Abbeville but with no result, as tanks are almost immune to ship fire.
In Dieppe there is the british contingent. No worry, as they'll stay there until the end of the scenario.
Enemy has attacked Amiens with land and air units, but with no success, thanks to the river and the BF109e.
At Reims, enemy has destroyed an infantry unit and tries to keep the town. Ch B1-bis tank is a real menace.

Casualties are: Axis 1 infantry - Allies 1 infantry.

TURN 2
From east to west: Ju88A attacks light cruiser and reduces its strength.
Air defense and BF109's take down the two Hurricanes on Amiens. I also wipe out the tank attacking through the river and the artillery just behind it.
I also attack the D520S french fighter and engulf it with two BF's to kill it next turn.
I kill an infantry and an artillery unit in Reims and occupy the town and its airfield. Best unit to deal with Ch B1-bis tank is JU87, so I attack it and reduce its strength by 4 points.
The two infantry units are embarked on air transports and head south.

TURN 2 - ALLIES
From east to west: light cruiser flees. British heavy weapons infantry makes an ill-fated attack on Abbeville, losing 7 strength points.
French infantry units attack Amiens through Somme river, exposing themselves to massacre.
In Reims, Ch B1-bis tank retreats, while three infantry units hold position.

Total casualties: Axis: infantry 1 - Allies: infantry 2 - tank 1 - artillery 2 - fighter 2.

TURN 3 - AXIS
At Abbeville, the british heavy weapons unit has been destroyed.
At Amiens, two french infantry units on Somme river have been annihilated. D520S french fighter has also been taken down.
At Reims, three french infantry units have been destroyed. A JU87 has attacked Ch B1-bis tank but with no result. Another tank has appeared in the distance. It will be tough.

TURN 3 - ALLIES
At Amiens, french infantry units attack again.
At Reims, 43rd Ch B1-bis attacks PzIVD (3-3). The other four units hold position around Thierry.
Total casualties: Axis - infantry 1 - Allies: infantry 8 - tank 1 - artillery 2 - fighter 3.

TURN 4 - AXIS
At Amiens, two french infantry units are destroyed.
At Reims, JU87 finally kills 43rd Ch B1-bis, the other tactical bombers attack tanks in Thierry.
BF 109e takes down Potez tactical bomber.
I purchase two 15 sFH 18 artillery units, one in Ham and the other in Reims.
PHASE ONE is over, let's start with PHASE TWO, all units converge to Paris.

TURN 4 - ALLIES
Allies attack Amiens with the lst remaining unit. Suicide.
In Thierry the four units wait for the attack.
Total casualties: Axis - infantry 1 - Allies: infantry 10 - tank 2 - artillery 2 - fighter 3 - tac bomber 1.

TURN 5 - AXIS
In the east, german units are going to take Beauvais on their way to Paris. The french infantry unit on the Somme is destroyed but this slows down the units in Amiens.
In the west, siege on Thierry begins: a french tank is destroyed and an infantry unit hardly beaten. A tank unit occupies Chalons. Paris, here we come.

TURN 5 - ALLIES
At Thierry, french infantry and Ch B1-bis attack PzIIA, losses 5 for french and 3 for german.

TURN 6 - AXIS
In the west, tanks are going to cross Seine near Mantes to attack artillery and air defense from behind. Artillery take position to hit enemy units. Infantry waits for the final attack.
In the east, german units destroy two french infantry units, reduce Ch B1-bis strength from 7 to 5 and take Thierry.

TURN 6 - ALLIES
In the west, 8.8 FlaK 18 is too near french artillery, and loses 5 points. In the east Ch B1-bis attacks PzIIIE (1-1) and moves one hex.
Total casualties: Axis - infantry 1 - Allies: infantry 13 - tank 3 - artillery 3 - fighter 3 - tac bomber 1.

TURN 7 - AXIS
Tanks approaching Paris from behind take Mantes. There are two artillery units and three air defenses to eliminate before attacking the objective. In the east, a PzIIA occupies Troyes. In far south, the two infantry units on air transports take Nantes airfield and Vichy airfield. No fight this turn but 160 prestige points. A BF109 reveals that Montargis is guarded by only one infantry unit. This is a chance I cannot miss.

TURN 7 - ALLIES
Again, PzIB has gone too near enemy artillery and loses 1 strength point.

TURN 8 - AXIS
Battle for Paris begins. Backed by a 15 sFH 18, german tanks attack french artillery and destroy both units. Anyway no unit gets adjacent to the town, so next turn enemy player will be able to purchase new units. Four artillery units are now in position to pound french air defenses next turn. In Montargis, situation has not changed, so PzIIA gets near to catch enemy by surprise.
In the south, the two infantry units take Nantes and Vichy, another eighty prestige points.

TURN 8 - ALLIES
Enemy just moves an air defense unit and purchases a 75mm gun.
Total casualties: Axis - infantry 1 - Allies: infantry 13 - tank 4 - artillery 5 - fighter 3 - tac bomber 1.

TURN 9 - AXIS
After a barrage from the four artillery units, four german tanks attack and destroy the three french air defenses and the artillery unit. Enter two JU87 and two level bombers which lower the entrenchment level of the remaining defenders. The PzIIA gets adjacent to Montargis to prevent enemy from purchasing other units. In the south, the two infantry units in Nantes and Vichy upgrade to Opel 6700 land transport.

TURN 9 - ALLIES
Enemy attacks tank on Seine and infantry with little success.
Total casualties: Axis - infantry 1 - Allies: infantry 13 - tank 4 - artillery 6 - air defense 3 - fighter 3 - tac bomber 1.

TURN 10 - AXIS
The two infantry units and the fort defending Paris are eliminated, the town is occupied, now only the anti tank unit remains, battle for Paris is over.
Montargis airfield is taken.

TURN 10 - ALLIES
The anti-tank unit attacks the PzIB in Paris (2-3). No other movement.

TURN 11 - AXIS
The last unit in Paris is destroyed. Now let's begin PHASE THREE: split army in two: army group west will attack Le Havre first and then Caen, army group east will occupy Montargis, Orleans and Tours.
Army group west: first objective is Le Havre, which will be attacked from east and from south. Rouen stands in my way, it must be taken.
Army group east: first objective is Montargis, which is attacked first by air then by tanks. The defending infantry unit is reduced to 1. In the meantime a BF109 scouts Orleans, the following objective.

TURN 11 - ALLIES
No move.

TURN 12 - AXIS
Army group west: Rouen is taken. A BF109 scouts Le Havre airfield, revealing it's clear. In the meantime, four units head south of the city.
Army group east: some units are attacking Chartres, which holds. Montargis is taken. Three tank units head towards Orleans, to flank it and attack enemy artillery from behind.
In the south, the two infantry units take Saumur and Bourges.

TURN 12 - ALLIES
No move.

TURN 13 - AXIS
Army group west: german units take position to attack Le Havre, which is defended by the light cruiser we saw in the first turn. No artillery and no air defense, it seems thing are easier than expected.
Orleans instead is well-defended, so german troops flank the town to attack artillery units first from behind.

In the south, german infantry unit occupies Chateauroux.

TURN 13 - ALLIES
No movement.

TURN 14 - AXIS
It rains. Good for the defender. Units take position. Next turn both attacks will take place.
In the south, an infantry unit takes Angers.

TURN 14 - ALLIES
Enemy player purchases an artillery and an anti tank unit in Le Havre.

TURN 15 - AXIS
Army group west: artillery fire, then air attack, then infantry attack: two anti tank units are destroyed and one severely damaged. Germans get in touch with the objective, so no more reinforcements.
An artillery and an anti tank unit are destroyed, germans are adjacent to objective. Two air defense unit remain to prevent airplanes to be used.

TURN 15 - ALLIES
Allies units counterattack. At Le Havre, a german infantry unit loses 1 strength point and the other 5 strength points.
At Orleans, an infantry unit loses 3 strength points and the PzIIA loses 6 strength points.

TURN 16 - AXIS
Battle for Le Havre is almost over. The two antitank and the artillery units are destroyed and the light cruiser loses 2 strength points and is forced out of the town. German units are already heading towards Caen.
Orleans is tougher than Le Havre, as there are air defenses. One is destroyed, the infantry defending the town is reduced to 5 strength points and the artillery on the Loire loses 3 strength points.

TURN 16 - ALLIES
The light cruiser gets back in town and fires on the infantry unit which loses 3 strength points.
At Orleans, a german infantry unit loses 2 strength points and so does Pz38(t)A on Loire.
Total casualties: Axis - infantry 1 - Allies: infantry 18 - tank 4 - artillery 8 - anti tank 6 - air defense 4 - fort 1 - fighter 3 - tac bomber 1.

TURN 17 - AXIS
Battle for Le Havre is over, the light cruiser has been destroyed and now on to Caen.

Orleans has been taken as well, the four enemy units have been destroyed, next objective is Tours.

TURN 17 - ALLIES
No visible movement.

Total casualties: Axis - infantry 1 - Allies: infantry 19 - tank 4 - artillery 9 - anti tank 7 - air defense 5 - fort 1 - fighter 3 - tac bomber 1.

TURN 18 - AXIS
Battle for Caen has begun. Once the only air defense is destroyed, everything is easier. Four enemy units are destroyed: artillery, air defense and two anti tank.

Tours is hard to take: protected from Loire, there are two artillery and two air defense units.

TURN 18 - ALLIES
No visible action.

TURN 19 - AXIS
Battle for Caen is over. The three remaining enemy units have been destroyed, the objective has been taken. German units head for the last objective. Le Mans.
Battle for Tours is on. Air defense and artillery have been attacked and reduced in strength, the three german artillery units are now in position to attack defenders.

TURN 19 - ALLIES
Artillery on Loire attacks 14th 15 sFH 18 and causes two points loss.

TURN 20 - AXIS
We're getting near the end. German units coming from Caen are reaching Le Mans, while two enemy units at Tours are destroyed and others are reduced in strength.

TURN 20 - ALLIES
French units in Tours counterattack and inflict 4 points loss to 12th Pz38(t)A.

TURN 21 - AXIS
Le Mans is under attack, three french units have been destroyed, but unfortunately no german unit made it to get adjacent to the town, so next turn enemy will be able to get reinforcements. Tours is taken, three enemy units are destroyed.

TURN 21 - ALLIES
Enemy purchases three units, as expected, and moves air defense in Tours.

TURN 22 - AXIS
In Tours, air defense unit is destroyed. In Le Mans, all enemy units are eliminated and objective is taken. Game over.
